What a Minecraft MOTD is

The MOTD (message of the day) is the short description that appears next to your server in the player's multiplayer list. It is the first thing a player sees before joining, so a clear, inviting MOTD makes your server stand out. It is set on the motd line of server.properties.

Colours and formatting

Minecraft supports colour codes in the MOTD (the § character followed by a colour or formatting code) and two lines of text. This generator previews the result in real time and gives you ready-to-paste code for server.properties — you do not have to memorise the codes.

Tips for a good MOTD

Keep the first line short and say immediately what the server is about (for example the game mode or theme). Use colour for emphasis, not decoration — too much colour makes the text hard to read in the small server list. Note that some special characters and Unicode symbols do not render on every client.
